Approach to Phonics Webinar Series

Literacy Squared® has created a 6-part webinar series to help bilingual educators in their approach to phonics, phonemic awareness, and word work in kindergarten and first grade. Literacy Squared® is a trademarked and copyrighted program. No part of these videos may be reproduced, published, or broadcast without the prior written permission of Literacy Squared.

Part 1 explains the place of phonics, phonemic awareness, and word work within the Literacy Squared Framework, including paired literacy, cross-language connections, the reciprocal relationship between reading and writing, and the gradual release of responsibility.
Part 2 provides an overview of the theoretical framework for teaching phonemic awareness, phonics, and word work within Literacy Squared, including a whole-part-whole approach, universal aspects of literacy, and three ways of experiencing print.
Part 3 shares ways to plan for phonics, phonemic awareness, and word work instruction.
Part 4 shares concrete examples of how to embed letter-sound relationships and word work into Literacy Squared lessons.
Part 5 shares a concrete example of how to embed phonics and word work in Literacy-Based ELD.
Part 6 discusses the importance of cross-language connections to explicitly teach the similarities and differences between Spanish and English.
