biliterate reading trajectory specific to the students in their bilingual/dual language programs.
Who: Program Administrators, Data Specialists, Instructional Leaders (coordinators, coaches, etc.) who have attended previous training in Literacy Squared and the biliterate reading trajectories. We encourage the participation of district/school teams rather than individuals. Session 1: Building the Foundation
In this session, we will provide context around understanding the theoretical foundation that informed the creation of the Literacy Squared® biliterate reading trajectory and considerations when applying this theory to new contexts. We will walk participants through the ways that reading data needs to be collected and organized to develop a trajectory. District teams will discuss how the underlying theory of the biliterate reading trajectory can be applied to their context and will analyze their data collection and organization processes. Session 2: Analyzing Data Through a Bilingual Lens This session will be a working session, where district teams will be guided through a process to move from data organization to biliteracy zone identification. -- Optional Post Session Check-In Thursday, November 21, 2025. Districts have the option to sign up for a 30-minute timeslot to meet with the facilitators to receive feedback on the district’s progress in developing their trajectory. Session 3: Building and Sustaining Momentum: Using Biliteracy Zones for Decision-Making Teams will continue analyzing their data and creating a biliterate reading trajectory and we will discuss how biliterate reading zones can be used to make programmatic and instructional decisions. Teams will develop a plan for continued data collection and analysis. -- Optional Post Session Check-In Thursday, January 23, 2025. Districts have the option to sign up for a 30-minute timeslot to meet with the facilitators to receive feedback on the district’s progress in developing their trajectory. Session 4: Sharing Our Work and Sustainability In this final session, we will review our process and discuss ways to educate key stakeholders about the biliterate reading trajectory. Teams will share their process and progress on creating a trajectory. District teams will recalibrate and develop a sustainability plan. Frequently Asked QuestionsWhat types of data will we need? This workshop will best serve districts that are already collecting Spanish and English reading data from a parallel reading assessment (EDL/DRA, Fountas and Pinnell in Spanish and English, NWEA MAP in Spanish and English, STAR in Spanish and English, etc.). While we will not discuss the details of each assessment, we will guide teams through the process of collecting, organizing and analyzing data in order to make programmatic and instructional decisions.Would it be beneficial for classroom teachers to attend this workshop? This workshop is geared towards administrators and instructional leaders who have access to district data and who make programmatic decisions. The workshop will support administrative teams to create a plan to share their initial trajectory data with district stakeholders. Can I attend the workshop alone? Our workshops will have time built in for teams to work on their data. We find that this information is more powerful and effective when processed and developed by a team. What can I expect during the optional "Post Session 30-minute Check-Ins?"These optional sessions will provide individual districts time to meet with the facilitators to receive feedback on the district’s progress in developing their trajectory. Districts will sign up for a 30-minute time slot to discuss any questions or challenges they are encountering with the assigned tasks. What if I cannot attend all sessions? The four sessions of this workshop are cumulative so it will be imperative that at least some members from each district team attend every session. (Refunds will not be available for individuals who miss sessions)How can this be useful?Creating biliteracy zones will help you to determine if students are on a trajectory to becoming biliterate and to answer questions like, “What instruction do students need, and in which language?” and “Is my program working?” Once biliterate reading zones become an integral component of your program, this data can be used to guide instruction and programming, and also when reporting to families, community members, and the Board of Education regarding the effectiveness of your program. Will I need previous knowledge of Literacy Squared®?Because this workshop will be solely focused on the biliterate reading trajectories, with limited time to develop foundational knowledge of the Literacy Squared holistic biliteracy framework, we strongly recommend previous experience with Literacy Squared (through professional development with either the Literacy Squared team, Adelante Educational Specialists, or Dual Language Education of New Mexico). At a minimum, all participants should be familiar with the Biliteracy From the Start: Literacy Squared in Action book— chapter 6 in particular. If you don’t have previous knowledge of Literacy Squared, you can attend the “Theoretical Foundations of Literacy Squared” PD on Zoom on July 30, 2024. Please note this in your application. What happens after we apply? For those who apply by June 13th, we will inform you of your status by June 14th, 2024. For those who apply after June 13th, we will inform you of your status by August 20, 2024. If accepted, you will receive a link to register your team and for payment. How and when will we need to send payment?Once accepted, you will receive a link to register your team members, as well as a link for payment. We request payment be sent by September 11, 2024, to secure your team’s spot. We prefer payments by credit card, but can also accept payments via check or purchase order. What are you basing your selection process on?We want to ensure that our approach to biliterate reading trajectories will be applicable to the participating districts. Therefore, we will be looking at all of the application data (program model, previous training, reading assessments) to make our selection decisions.Application
